Lesson Study: a tool for improving outcomes for EAL learners

Outline

Originating from the Chinese Confucian tradition, Lesson Study has 140 years of history in Japanese schools and is increasingly used in East Asia, the US and Europe.

  • Half day training course on Lesson Study and the needs of EAL learners
  • Meeting at school to arrange lesson study cycle with teachers involved and identify three case students (1 hour approx.)
  • Meeting at school to jointly plan the first lesson in cycle with teachers involved.
  • Jointly deliver lesson 1, interview case students and then discuss the lesson in terms of impact on class and case students.
  • Meeting at school to jointly plan the second lesson in cycle with teachers involved.
  • Jointly deliver lesson 2, interview case students and then discuss the lesson in terms of impact on class and case students.
  • Meeting at school to jointly plan the third lesson in cycle with teachers involved.
  • Jointly deliver lesson 3, interview case students and then discuss the lesson in terms of impact on class and case students and the effectiveness of the entire lesson study cycle.

Description

  • To provide an overview of lesson study as a way of focusing on the needs of EAL students
  • To look at how planning and delivery of teaching can be integrated so that there is a focus on language and content within the context of lesson study

Outcomes

  • Increased progress through bespoke teaching and embedded strategies.
  • Improved attainment of a targeted group of EAL learners as well as the rest of the class
  • Staff know how to carry out their own lesson study cycle at their schools through choosing their own focus for the lesson study and evaluating afterwards.
  • Staff able to disseminate the lesson study process to colleagues in other departments or Key stages.
  • Staff benefit from supportive and collaborative process with their colleagues.
