Play to PE - PVI / Preschools

Play to PE developed by Owen Denovan and Kate Hill

Owen and Kate are both experienced primary school teachers with a combined 30 years experience of teaching in primary schools and early years.

Kate is a Primary PE specialist and has a degree in Primary Physical Education as well as ten years experience working as the early years lead in a primary school.

Owen has taught across all key stages as well as 4 years experience of PE consultancy. He has supported primary schools in developing PE and sport as well as training teachers; enabling them to deliver a higher quality of PE teaching to their pupils.

Physical Development is a prime area of the EYFS. We believe that it is possible for pre-schools, nurseries and reception classes to offer greater oportunities for children to develop skills in order to improve Physical Literacy (fundamental movement skills) through focused teaching and independent play.

Currently 1 in 3 children leave primary school over-weight or obese and 1 in 5 children leave KS1 above a healthy weight. If, during the early years, we can provide children with the opportunity to improve their physical literacy as well as instill in them a love of moving and of being physically active, children will reach Year 1 with a higher level of skill/engagement, preparing them for National Curriculum PE.

With physical activity being part of their everyday school life, these children may be more inclined to participate in competition and activities/sports outside of school.
